A ten mile run, which is runnable in all seasons, and some of the road sections can be replaced by footpaths in good weather. The sections around Hampton Gay and Pigeon Lock are particularly interesting.
Starting in Woodstock, head out past the secondary school and swimming pool to Sansoms Lane. Turn left and after 200m turn right off the lane across the field, head east, eventually past a house and garden on the left. The path becomes the drive to the house, continue to meet the Upper Campsfield Road (A4095). Go straight across, although the old road has been closed to traffic, to the main Banbury road (A4260). There is an old electrical sub station, which has been turned into a tiny dwelling on the left. Go right a few yards then cross the main road and a ditch via a wooden plank. Keep to left of the hedge and to the right of the barn, past the bee hives. Go through the hedge ahead and turn right on to what was originally the Woodstock-Kidlington railway line and later a road around the quarry. The track meets a road in Shipton-on-Cherwell, bear right along the road away from the housing estate, then left at the T-junction, down the hill past Shipton Manor and the church. At the bottom cross the canal bridge, through the gate, over the river Cherwell, and follow the footpath around to the left of the railway line. Go under the railway bridge on the suspended wire walkway. Follow the fence on the left and past the isolated church of Hampton Gay, later a few houses that constitute the village are reached, being located at the end of a road. Head up the road reaching the T-junction of the road from Hampton Poyle and turn left to Bletchingdon. Alternatively, take the footpath to Bletchingdon on the left on the first corner outside Hampton Gay, heading across the fields, which may be growing wheat, and through a farm. Both routes go up a hill to the village, which is also spelt Bletchington on different road signs at either end of the village. On reaching the village centre, go straight across the Wootton-Islip road (B4027), towards Weston-on-the-Green on cycle route 51. Keep left and go past the church and around the side of the riding stables, which is part of the park. Once past the buildings, head north-east across open fields on a footpath until trees are reached. Turn right to join a short track, then left at a road that soon becomes a track again and follow for about 400m until the Oxfordshire Way crosses. Turn left on to the Oxfordshire Way and head west across a field, through trees, and more fields straight towards Kirtlington. The footpath heads uphill with Kirtlington House on the right. The path exits the park on to the A4095 in the centre of the village. Turn right then left and left again down Mill Lane to Pigeon Lock. At the canal turn right and cross the various weirs and bridges, turning left after the River Cherwell. Avoid turning right to Tackley Station and keep straight on and under the railway line. Shortly after the Oxfordshire Way turns right, but this path can be very muddy. The all-weather route is to keep straight on past Old Whitehill Farm and then turn right at the road junction, to meet the Oxfordshire Way again at the telephone exchange, a hut on its own. Hence follow the standard route back to Woodstock via the Oxfordshire Way, which is the Roman road of Akeman Street here, and then along Dornford Lane.
