Krakow Parkrun, Poland – 29th July

Ralf took in a local parkrun in Poland whilst visiting family. His report is below
Due to the Tour de Pologne visiting town the venue for parkrun Krakow 215 changed from a pancake flat 5k loop round one of the city’s main parks to a relentless hill run just out of town. It was tough with a gruelling uphill finish. The terrain was a mixture of rough track and asphalt through a forest. The Poles I met were very friendly after the race and made me feel welcome to their event. They were most interested to know how many marathons I’d done and in what times, a very competitive bunch! In the normal venue up to 200 people join in every week. There were 115 at the alternative venue which I ran at. I really enjoyed the participation of this event and ran to my best on the day, finishing 20th in 24:06
I was surprised how many people I saw running in Krakow, it’s an active city with great facilities for all sports.

Poole 10K – Sunday 4th June 2017

Colin managed to finish the Poole 10k in under an hour despite still having ankle issues. Grab yourself some popcorn, his report of the race is below. Winning time: 31:56 (Men) / 36:31 (Women). Number of finishers: 1105

688  Colin Travi  57:14

I turned up on the evening of Saturday 3rd june to registrar for the race and was spellbound by the organisers and volunteers who had numerous races to plan and ensure its successful execution before the 10k race the following day. In its own way, it was unlike other local races as there were various stalls, raffles, physio, massage and sales pitches which added to the ambiance. The location was in Poole park which encompassed various large lakes, fountains and huge picnic areas which gave the first impression that the course was going to be a real sight to behold.

The next day I turned up early with over 1000 other runners from all walks of life and clubs and the chatter at the start was what the course was about, the heat was it a factor but for me my biggest trepidation: Was my ankle going to hold up after the Achilles went at Lymington? I wasn’t going to push it but I was damn well going to finish it.

2 laps around Poole harbour encompassing the views of Brownsea island, Sandbanks and the water sports so predominant in the harbour together with the sea smells made the race pleasurable. The sea breezes cooled the hot weather and ensured that de-hydration set in. My Ankle was tight and each step showed a bit of discomfort but I managed to keep to a surprising 9 minutes miling. There were different abilities and I was Vying with other runners for dominance which ebbed and flowed. Some runners got their second wind but tired, others seemed on the downward spiral but recovered to a fast finish. Twice I stopped to stretch but was surprised that I still had stamina to catch up. The final 1km saw myself reeling in a lot of tired bunnies and but daren’t do a sprint finish. In the end. I got the medal and t shirt and plan to run it next year.

He’ll have to declare the silver he took, as he finished a brilliant 2nd. Northern Ireland running press report of the race.

He writes:
I had a good time in Northern Ireland for the Newry Half Marathon. There were marathon and 10k races as well. It was a tough course with a gentle climb to 6m followed by a very steep hill (150ft in 800m!) Then back down and along a cycle path following the canal back to town tripping over the 10k back markers! It was neck and neck between 2 of us but I just got out-sprinted in the last 200m! Great fun and quite pleased with the time considering the course. And I got to show the Woodstock vest on the podium!

There were many strong runs despite the unfavourable conditions; Adrian took a huge 3 minutes off from his previous time. Dan ran a very strong and consistent race. It was great to see Neil and Sam back racing too. Paula’s fantastic report is below.

One runners thoughts on the night – Paula Booth.

As Cyrus gathers the Woodstock Harriers together for a team photo, with our smart, happy, yellow vests, this moment is captured for prosperity. There is something about these village recreation grounds with their old cricket pavilions. The weather is about as good as it gets, I’ve never met a runner that I didn’t like, so all in all I can’t think of a better place to be on a Thursday evening.
The atmosphere is swirling with excited giddy energy. People are talking about their nerves and worries for the race, and it occurs to me how different some of them are to my own. You see, there is no pressure or expectation on me. I am, lets face it, pretty slow by comparison, I don’t have to worry about my time, position or whether I can break any records. I do get a little bit more nervy at a race though. So what am I worried about? Mostly whether it’s going to hurt, and whether I can finish what I’ve started. Experience tells me; it might hurt as much as I will let it, I can control that and I usually do get to the end O.K. What’s the worse that can happen? Well actually, there are so many willing and lovely volunteer marshals here, if anything goes wrong someone will help me.
As I start to run I feel a bit tense at first, but after a while I loosen up and my legs feel alright. I get a shout out from Colin who is marshalling tonight, which gives me a lift to carry on. I’m having a good time when I see the finish line. I am the last Woodstock Harrier back, which makes me the the the luckiest runner in the world, because this means all the other runners from the club are there already to cheer and welcome me home. Not only can those Harriers run good, they are awesome at encouraging and supporting their team mates.
