Week 14 (w/c 29 June – Month 3, week 5)
All good things must come to an end!
Myself (Lucy) and Adrian would like to start this week by thanking everyone who embraced the Corona Challenge Series and took part each week in our quirky challenges. Many hours have been spent on this but it’s been worth it to see what you have all been getting up to. We hope we have managed to motivate you all during these strange times and offer you some enthusiasm to keep going out and clocking up the miles. As a club we will now move forward and into (hopefully) more familiar times. I think we all hope to see the inside of Mikes garage soon!
On a personal level I would like thank Adrian for all of the hard work that he has put into this, without him this wouldn’t have taken off, nor would a lot of the challenges have existed. We have his long runs and over active imagination to thank for this ?
To summarise the last 14 weeks, we have ran 10,965.2 miles and climbed a massive 512,002ft. To put that into perspective, setting off from Woodstock you’d get between Australia and New Zealand and this is more than 17 times the height of Everest!
Our most successful week was week 9, this was the week of the maximum small challenge which saw our runners run the most laps of the smallest route. Liz absolutely smashed it this week with 100 laps of the Blenheim triangle, still makes me feel dizzy now! This week was also the week of our highest mileage and elevation gain.
Week 11 saw the one and only time we saw the treble win with Tom “Mr 60” winning every challenge that week but by far the most impressive and longest standing record was Ralf’s super impressive 7,557ft elevation gain. Ralf completed this in the very first week and no one came close…this is also what earned him the title “Mr Hills”.
Kudos champions!
Now let’s crack on before you all start tearing up…
Week 5 closes month 3 so read through to the end to see who has won the final case of Corona. Or, skip to the bottom if the anticipation is too much….
Totals this week are:
Distance: 785.7 miles
Elevation gain: 36,095 ft
Both are a slight dip from previous weeks but with less sun, we see less miles – roll on sunshine!
Distance Challenge
Making it 10 weeks at the top, Mr 60 pulled it out of the bag this week, running over 70 miles (just!) with a total of 70.1 miles. This is nearly 20 miles over second place, who this week is Georgette with 50.7 miles. Moving up one place from last week! In a close third place this week is Ralf with 49.7 miles.
Elevation Gain Challenge
Only one runner managed over 3,000ft elevation this week and surprisingly it wasn’t Mr Hills. Taking his second win for the week is Mr 60. (Yay!) Tom climbed an impressive 3,071ft, Mr Hills managed second place with 2,930ft taking the lead in this challenge over Georgette who snaps up third place with 2,854ft.
Wildcard Challenge
The wildcard challenge was film inspired this week (at least the name anyway!) – 24 Hour Party People
This challenge was all about the highest amount of miles in a 24 hour period. Taking the win this week is Mr Hills with 18.85 miles, unsurprising, closely followed by Adrian with 18.44 miles, I’m not sure if this difference is Strava or a loop back from Ralf but either way, great running both and a well-deserved win to Ralf!
(**Adrian edit : Ha, he ran around Tar Lake as Alan and I looked on, taking in a gel each. They broke me with the pace on an unusually flatter than normal Sunday long run!)
Taking third place this week, and always showing enthusiasm in the challenges is Liz with an impressive 15 miles. Of course, completed in the stunning grounds of Blenheim. Liz’s running mecca.
Also, special mention to Susan Haines who completed over 12 miles choosing to go many smaller routes aided by canine. Kudos Susan, great effort!
Week 5 Summary
With zero foul play, but slight assistance by your Co-Captains, the winner this week is Mr 60 – completing entries in all challenges, this is the second time this month that Tom has topped the table!
Taking his fourth second place for the month is Mr Hills, again with entries in all challenges but no effort session for the win, it was a close battle – well done Ralf.
Liz takes third place this week which is also the third time Liz has achieved this place this month.
Well done to our weekly winners and everyone who took part!
Month 3 wrap up
Well he did it! Taking the crown for the final time is Mr 60. I for sure have enjoyed typing the write ups week after week and watching the miles and challenge entries, so great effort Tom, this win is well deserved and a case of Corona (friendly beer kind) is making its way to you!
First place – Tom Preskett (116 points)
Second place – Ralf Arneil (114 points)
Third place – Adrian Smith (108 points)
As always, have fun, stay safe and run strong!
That’s all folks!
